Does Ozone Kill Bacteria?
The short answer is YES, the clarifying add-on questions to that statement is:
What type of bacteria and what strain? Staph, e. Coli, Listeria, etc?
Is the Ozone in a liquid or gas state when applied and at what concentration (ppm)?
Many ozone generator manufacturers and distributors make kill claims (efficacy claims) but… if you’re dispensing aqueous ozone into a container, mop bucket, or spray bottle- keep in mind that ozone begins working immediately, EVEN on the container that’s holding it. You could all this a “Two-Step” approach to a weaker cleaning solution.

This means that as soon as Ozone gas or water is produced, it should be applied directly onto the surface you’re cleaning.
Hygeia’s SB100 is the first successfully manufactured field tested “portable” aqueous ozone spray bottle which means the water tank isn’t holding ozonated water, it is just plain tap water until you press the electrical trigger. Ozone reacts too quickly to surfaces including containers, buckets, and even air which greatly weakens efficacy immediately.
Ozone is the number one oxidizer available, better than bleach, but it loses it’s power to kill bacteria effectively as soon as it is produced. When dispensing into a carrier like a hand pump spray bottle or a mop bucket, Ozone begins immidiately reacting to that bottle, that bucket, and the air. This quickly weakens the efficacy claims. The question becomes, when you do your efficacy tests… are you dispensing from the wall mounted unit onto your test sample or are you dispensing into a container and then pouring from there onto your test sample?
The second example would be using a far weaker solution and therefore produces a real world application test.
Most commercial grade Ozone Generators (Gas or Aqueous) are bulky, non-portable, and not convenient. Most commerical units producing an Ozone concentration of 1 to 2 ppm are either heavy and on wheels or are wall mounted units located far await from your cleaning assignment. For example, when used in a hotel operation, the dispensing unit is mounted downstairs in the basement, dispensed into a holding container, carried to the room and then used for cleaning. As mentioned above, the ozone quickly weakens due to reaction time to the holding container and the surrounding air. The add on problem which is also your greatest expense is… the TIME needed to refill your bottle at the dispensing station.
The efficacy kill claims are only true when dispensed directly from the production unit. Quick question: Are you going to carry the wall mounted unit or roll that mobile unit from room to room? Probably not. If you did could you afford to supply each of your staff per shift with their own machine? Not at all cost effective, right?
Here’s the scary part… (Continuing with the hotel use example) your surface sanitizing isn’t effective. Your customers are exposed to bacteria.
How are they exposed? The obvious examples… surface contact and odors. You’re spraying the bathroom to perhaps kill urine odor but to your solution has depleted it’s strength. To paint a clear picture, imagine filling two mop buckets with clean water. Bucket 1 is clean, bucket 2 is dirty. When adding in your water, which would be an effective cleaning solution and which would not? Pretty simple, Bucket 1 because clean water (representing full strength) applied to a dirty surface would have better cleaning ability. Bucket 2 would produce less results because the water was “weakened” by the loss of cleaning strength due to using isn’t power on the dirty surface of the bucket itself.
Dispensing from a wall mounted unit is a two step, two surface problem which equals weaker cleaning power.
What is the answer to solving these three problems?
Manufacture an affordable, portable, handheld, Ozone producing, handheld unit.
